Why an evaluation matters

An evaluation does two things: it gives you real answers about how your child is developing, and it opens doors to services and school supports that often require a diagnosis or assessment. Even if you're unsure, an evaluation is rarely the wrong move — information helps.

The three main paths

Which door you use depends mostly on your child's age:

• Under age 3 — Regional Center of the East Bay (RCEB). California's early-intervention system evaluates young children with developmental concerns and, if eligible, coordinates services at no cost to families. This is usually the fastest first door for the youngest kids.
• Age 3 and up — your school district (Tri-Valley SELPA). Public school districts, including Dublin USD, are required to assess children for special-education eligibility, which can include an educational autism assessment.
• Any age — your pediatrician, health plan, or a private provider. Ask your pediatrician for a referral. A medical diagnosis (often using a tool called the ADOS) can be done through your insurance or a community provider like us.
